A Moral Question
In this essay you will find out about American equality and efficiency. This essay is also about a women name Nicki White. Do you know what happened with her and how she spent the last month of her life? What is the relationship between it and the value of the United State?
When Nicki White graduated from college, she got systemic lupus erythematous. She had too much money to quality for health care under welfare but too little money to pay for the drugs and doctors. She needed to stay alive, so she spent the last month of her life frantically writing letters and filling out forms, pleading for help. She died at thirty-two years old.
Ms. White’s death could be explained by two American values. Equality means that the quality of being the same in quantity or measure or value. In a positive way, people have equal opportunities. People are important as individuals, and for who they are, not from which family they come. However, in this case, Ms. White had too much money to quality for health care under welfare. Although the poor people have health care in America, the bourgeoisie don’t have good care. So it is not equal for everyone. Another American value is efficiency. This means skillfulness in avoiding wasted time and effort. Again, this value has two sides. One side is that it can improve people work efficiency and save time. But in this case, on the contrary, Nicki White spent the last month of her live frantically writing letters and filling out forms, pleading for help. However, she was ignored, nobody helped her. When she died, she was 32 years old. There were no ways and organizations can help her in America.
In my opinion, I think the values of the United States are not perfect, they still have some defects. In the first place, not all people are equal. No matter who should enjoy the proper treatment. Next, the government should improve the efficiency. Ms. White spent a month for help, but it still didn’t solve the problem. Finally, the American values need everyone to work hard and make it more complete and perfect.
In conclusion, the moral question is a social question. Everyone should pay attention to the problem. Everyone should have equality. We also need to improve our efficiency.
volunteerism
There are many volunteers in our live. What do you think of volunteerism? Volunteerism means a spirit of mutual assistance, with return. With their own hands, minds, knowledge, love to carry out all kinds of volunteer service activities, and free to help those in difficulties and crisis. Volunteerism is dedication, friendship, and assistance. There are a lot of volunteer opportunities in our life. To be a good volunteer needs a great love and patience.
First of all, volunteerism has many benefits. To be a volunteer, you don’t receive a financial reward, but you will find many benefits of volunteering. You can gain experience to include on your resume and transfer application, help others and be a part of the community, meet new people, use your skills and interest while teaching new ones, increase your motivation and sense of achievement. For example, one of my classmates Jessica was a volunteer for one year. She helped blind and deaf children to give them breakfast and lunch, led them to go everywhere, and play with the children in her hometown. She thought it was very wonderful because the children needed help and she could help them.
Secondly, there are a lot of volunteer opportunities in our life. For example, there is an organization in QCC. AHRC New York City helps 15,000 New Yorkers with developmental and intellectual disabilities build full lives as defined by each person each year. Employment mentoring spend two hours helping people supported by AHRC with resume and cover letter writing, e-mail correspondence, managing on-line applications and follow up with potential employers after an interview. In New York, Love Your Block is a special partnership between NYC Service and Citizens Committee for New York City that provides a unique opportunity for city residents to transform and beautiful their neighborhoods while leveraging city services. Resident-led volunteer groups receive a grand of up to $1,000 dollars to transform a city block.
In short, volunteer is good for everyone.
Finally, as far as I can see, being a good volunteer requires a great love and patience. I used to be a volunteer in my high school. I helped librarian to put books into bookshelves. Although I thought it was interesting, it required much time and energy. It’s weary for a volunteer. They contribute a lot, but they don’t pay back. I would like to be a volunteer because I think everyone needs help in trouble. When you are in trouble, you will hope someone can give you selfless assistance.
In conclusion, volunteerism is dedication, friendship and helpfulness. There are many volunteers in life. A good volunteer needs a selfless love and great patience. Volunteerism should be admirable and promoted because it is beneficial to build a harmonious society

Online Learning
In the past, we only had one way to study, which was going to school. It was very simple. But now, we can have many ways to study. They are divided into three main categories, which are face-to-face, online and hybrid. Do you know what characteristics they have?
First of all, face-to-face is a traditional way, but it is still widely used to learn. Face-to-face means you can together and study with your classmates and teachers in class. You can share different views with classmates and ask questions to teachers. If you don’t understand clearly, you can ask the speaker to speak more slowly. Face-to-face can also help your conversation and improve your speaking. You will focus more attention and learn more information by face-to-face. On the contrary, you will waste time. You have to waste time listening to what you already know. You also waste time and money commuting to school. However you can learn something else, and when the teacher is teaching you what you have to do.If possible, you can rent apartment near school, and you wouldn’t waste time.
Second, online is a controversial learning style. Online means you can watch videos to study by Internet. When it comes to study online, different people have different views. Some people think online can save time, because they can make reasonable arrangements and use redundant time to do something. They can do some research by Internet. However, some others think online can’t focus on and have time limit. Miss Yuting who one of my classmates thinks she couldn’t discus with classmates when she studied online. For me, when I studied online about” Human Guinea Pigs: Involuntary Medical Experimentation –A Global Perspective” by Dr. Elisa Von. I couldn’t understand and ask questions to teachers and classmates. I can’t make the speakers adjust their speed too. I had to listen more times. So I think it is very difficult for me.
Finally, an ideal way of learning is hybrid. Hybrid means that it combines the advantages of face-to-face and online. Hybrid can effective and efficient to use time and help students better understand because it not only learns from Internet also from professors. Students can discuss issues with each other. However, there are only a few people think that hybrid will spend too much effort. It haves to do more homework and research to ready for classes. They think it is very tired.
In conclusion, face-to-face, online and hybrid have their advantages and disadvantages, different people adapt to different methods. In order to better understand, choose owe way to improve learning efficiency.

Miss Evers’ Boys
Nowadays, with the development of medical technology, the cure of human diseases has become more and more perfect. However, do you know what kinds of price people pay for the medical way? What do you think of human body experiment? Have you heard of informed consent? It means consent by a patient to undergo a medical or surgical treatment after the patient understands the risks involve. Unfortunately, there are several examples in medical history where this rule is not followed.
The shocking true story of the federal government's secret medical experiment that happened on southern blacks in the 1930s. Loyal, devoted nurse Eunice Evers is invited to work with doctors on a federally funded program to treat syphilis patients in Alabama. Free treatment is offered to those who test positive for the disease, including Caleb Humphries and Willie Johnson. But when the government withdraws its funding, money is offered for what will become the Tuskegee Experiment; a study of the effects of patients who don't receive treatment. Now the men must be lead to believe they are being cared for, when in fact they are being denied the medicine that could cure them. Miss Evers is faced with a terrible dilemma - to abandon the experiment and tell the patients or to remain silent and offer only comfort. It is a life and death decision that will dictate not only of her life, but the lives of Miss Evers' Boys.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is similar to the film. The doctors took Hela cells without asking. Those cells are eternal. Henrietta’s family didn’t know Hela cells at all until many years after Henrietta died, and they didn’t get economic compensation. Henrietta Lacks seems like the 412 men who are in the film that the doctor didn’t tell them the truth. They were discriminated against because they were black, so they didn’t have right and they aren’t respected. If they were white, would the outcome be different?
In my opinion, I think the 412 men fell victim to medical experiments. They were concealed and cheated. How unfair it was to these poor men and their families. When it comes to Miss Evers, I think she is kind that she consoled the involved men and tried to help them regardless of the consequences. As far as the Dr. Broadus and Dr. Douglas, they only considered their interests, regardless of the life and death of others. There is too much injustice in this world. These kinds of movies raise our moral standards.
In conclusion, Miss Evers’ Boys is the shocking true story of the federal government's secret medical experiment on southern blacks in the 1930s. It is similar with The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Although there will be sacrifice in the way of medical development, those who sacrifice should have the right to know. On the other hand, medical researchers should award medical volunteers with some appropriate compensation.

CAT-W#1
This article explains that about good schools can make low-income teenagers healthier. The study found that kids who went to high-performing school were less likely to participate in risky health behaviors than teens who attended school that weren’t as good. As a result, students in high-performing schools have less unsafe behaviors than the teens who attended lower-performing schools. Lead author Dr. Michael Wong confirmed the assumption that “better education will lead to better health”.
I think that education is significant in this article. The reasons are as follow. Students who graduated from good school can make more money. Education can make countries have great progress. Learning is worthwhile.
First of all, students who graduate from good schools can make more money. In good schools, students have more chance to take part in activities, and improve their ability. For example, students can meet different people, and communicate with them. The students will know how to get along with others. It is important for student to make good relationship in the future. In the good schools, students also learn interpersonal skills and major subjects. They will easier to find a job than the students who graduated from bad schools. More and more companies need worker who have high-performing school’s degree.
Second, education can make countries have great progress. Development of countries is based on education. Students who are country of future need be taught knowledge and skills by schools. They will try their best to return the country. They can make contributions in the social. Education can not only improve personal ability, but also improve country’ power.
Finally, learning is always worthwhile. For everyone, it is necessary to learn. Learning can make for person better. You will find the world is exciting. There is no end to learning work boat. There are many things need us explored. It highlights the challenge to explore the world. There are many secrets waiting us to find. Such as biology, history and culture.
In conclusion, as far as I am consented, education is significant. It is benefit for everyone and countries. Students who graduate from good school can make more money. Education can make countries have great progress. Learning is always worthwhile. In short, education can create a peaceful and wonderful social.

College Education
According to a recent survey, 19.9million students were enrolled in college and universities in2013, compared to 13.5 million in 1970, and 2.7 million in 1949. The debate over whether a college education is worth it may have begun when the colonists arrived from Europe and founded “New College”. Different people have different perspectives. As far as I’m concerned, it is worth a college education, the reasons are as follows.
First of all, college graduates make more money. On average a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree earned $30,000 more per year than a high school graduate, or about $500,000 more over a life time, as of Apr, 2013. The median income for families headed by a bachelor’s degree holder was $100,096 in 2011 --- more than double than that for a family headed by a high school graduated. The median increase in earnings for completing the freshman year of college students will make more money than high school graduate.
Next, young adults learn interpersonal skills in college. Students have the opportunity to interact with other students and faculty, to join student organizations and clubs, and to take part in discussions and debates. Students ranked “interpersonal skills” as the most important skill used in their daily lives in a 1994 survey of 11,000 college students. They develop skills which make them innovative. Americans are the most innovative people in the world because of the education system. In college, you will form a community with different people, and train social capacity and adaptability.
Finally, learning is always worthwhile. According to Rebecca Mead, staff writer for The New Yorker, college teaches students to “nurture critical thought; to expose individuals to the signal accomplishment of humankind; to develop in them an ability not just to listen actively but to respond intelligently”. All of which “are habits of mind … from which a letter carrier, no less than a college professor, might derive a sense of self-worth”. In 2011, 74% of students said college helped them grow intellectually and 69% said college helped them grow and mature as people. If you graduate, you will get a degree, but if you don’t learn something at all, then college failed.
On the contrary, some people say that college degrees do not guarantee learning or job preparation. Many students graduate from college with little understanding of math, reading, civics, or economics, so they can’t do many things. However, if you work hard and you learn more in college, you will understand math, reading, skills, and you will become a better human. Therefore, it is easy to find jobs. The students who can’t find jobs are the ones who don’t work hard in college.
In conclusion, it is worth getting a college education. College graduates make more money, young adults learn interpersonal skills in college and learning is always worthwhile. I think it is necessary for students to go to college.

Henritta Lacks
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is about Henrietta and her family. She is famous for Hela cells. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first "immortal" human cells grown in culture.they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. Henrietta's family did not learn of her "immortality" until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family—especially Henrietta's daughter Deborah, who was devastated to learn about her mother's cells. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance.
The family should be financially compensated for the Hela cells from the government. On page two, Skloot writes” I have try to imagine how she had feel knowing that her cells went up in the first space missions to see what would happen to human cells in zero gravity, or that they helped with some of the most important advances in medicine: the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization.” Hela cells have made a great contribution to the development of medicine and you can’t predict the value new information will have until you learn it. However, Lacks family unexpectedly didn’t get any compensation. “Even Hopkins, which did treat black patients, segregated them in colored wards, and had colored-only fountains.” They are discriminated against because they are black, so they don’t have rights and they aren’t respected. Though they are black, they should get equal status. I think the government should attach high importance to Henrietta and give them compensation.
Furthermore, the Lacks family deserves health insurance even though they can’t afford it. Deborah says, “But I always have thought it was strange, if our mother cells done so much for medicine, how come her family can’ afford to see no doctors? Don’t make no sense.” It is very ironic for the family. Henrietta made the contribution in medicine, but her family couldn’t have health insurance. Certainly, for a country that is only now facing up to the consequences and implications of universal health insurance, the story of Henrietta Lacks is a telling one. One of Lacks's sons asks Skloot: "If our mother is so important to science, why can't we get health insurance?" The Lacks family never received compensation for the commercialization of HeLa cells. The family has remained poor and to this day has inconsistent health care insurance.
I would justice if I were in their situation. There is too much injustice in this world. Dr. Gey took Henrietta’s cells without asking. It seemed like theft. And the company which sells the Hela cells also liked steal. The Hela cells belong to Henrietta. Nevertheless, when the cells were sold, the Lacks family didn’t get anything. So the doctor and the company should be punished. I think the society should give them the honor they deserve. On page 233, Deborah said:” First, if my mother is so famous in science history, you got to tell everybody to get her name right. She ain’t no Helen Lane. And second, everybody always say Henrietta Lacks had four children. That ain’t right, she had five children” The family wanted to Henrietta Lacks be known by the world.
In conclusion, it is unfair for Henrietta Lacks’ family. Hela cells that belong to Henrietta have made a great contribution to the development of medicine, but her family and children didn’t get any compensation and health insurance. It was the best times for science in that this very peculiar tumor gave rise to the Hela cell line. For Mrs. Lacks and the family she left behind, it was the worst of times.

Immigration
As we know, there are many immigrants in every country. Immigration means the people move from their country to other country. When it comes to immigration, different people have different perspectives. Some people think it is beneficial for society and it can help each other. However, others don’t think so. They think immigration is a waste of resources.
On one hand, some people think that immigration is good for immigrants and the country that has many immigrants. For the immigrants, they can get a better life and jobs by working hard. They also receive a good education and they can have a chance to change their lives by immigration. For the country, the country also gains much culture from different countries and the country can increase cultural exchange and eliminate misunderstanding between different people. The country can improve the development of economy by immigrant labor force. In the United States, for example, there are many immigrants from all over the world, and many of the immigrants work in high-tech companies, because the immigrants still believe it will provide more opportunities for them in the future.
On the other hand, some Americans also think immigration is negative for the country that receives immigrants and immigration. Immigrants will occupy native people’s space and resources. For example, in America, there are immigrants who use too many expensive public resources, like schools and medical services. For the immigrants, they have to face many challenges. It is very difficult for them to adapt to the new culture and life. They have to learn about new language and knowledge that is strange for them. So they do the dangerous work, but they only have a lower wage than the native person.
As far as I can see, I don’t think immigration is good. In my hometown, there are many young people who move to other countries such as America, England and Spain. Therefore, many elder people are left in my hometown. They aren’t going to continue their economic momentum without a large enough labor force. Some things that need to be done do not have people to do them. And nobody cares for the elder people who miss their children and family.
In conclusion, immigration brings a better life for immigrants. Meanwhile, immigration hurts the people who were left behind. In the future, perhaps there will be more and more immigrants; they should think of the elder people who were left.
